A Man is a two-legged creature, without feathers

"I don't deny," he said, "that there should be priests to remind
men that they will one day die. I only say that at certain
strange epochs it is necessary to have another kind of priests,
called poets, actually to remind men that they are not dead yet.
The intellectuals among whom I moved were not even alive enough
to fear death. They hadn't enough blood in them to be cowards.
Until a pistol barrel was poked under their very noses they never
even knew they had been born. For ages looking up an eternal
perspective it might be true that life is a learning to die.
But for these little white rats it was just as true that death
was their only chance of learning to live."

    Flowers and Life

Hey! There are no easy ways to tell people about these things, but in an effort to wear life on the sleeve, (so to speak, in the ether that is the Web), I wanted to share that I miscarried a pregnancy at 11 weeks last week. I share this on our Web site, not to illicit sympathy, but to share with those people to whom we had announced the pregnancy. (I would have a hard time sending out those e-mails and a bulk e-mail didn't feel right either.)

I wanted to express thanks to everyone who sent flowers, made us dinner, and were just bastions of care during a sad time. (I'm going to plant all the tulip, hyacinth, and narcissus bulbs in the back yard.) We are doing very well and know that life is a miracle of which God is in control.

    friendship

    I love my friends.

And I feel that it is not enough to call them simply friends; more than brothers and sisters.
There is a deep sea, a glowing ember of love, trust, and brotherhood. It is what it means when it is said
"Now you are the body of Christ..."

clean blood, clean water >> clean heart, clean hands

I often forget where I am. Living in Tallahassee, Florida, in the United States.
Sometimes I feel sick and disgusted by my own affluence. (Though I am by no means affluent by American standards.)
Jars of Clay gave a free concert Thursday night on FSU's campus. The music was superb, invigorating, and sacred. The band spoke about a trip to Africa that has moved them very deeply. They have started a non-profit to benefit people in Africa called the Blood:Water Mission.
The first song of the concert was "And They Will Know We Are Christian By Our Love".
"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Does the world see love when they see the church? I do not ask as an outsider accusing. I am a part. We don't even love ourselves. A sign on a local church recently read "It is right to hate unrighteousness." There is a chilling accuracy in the statement. Certainly, God hates unrighteousness. Certainly. He hates the stubbornness and rebellion of our hearts when we hate our neighbor. When we preach that the kingdom of hell is nigh, but fail to mention the kingdom of Heaven.
