    Creative Urges

About 8 years, I spent six months with a local company called Infinity Software Development. While there, I met a number of interesting people, one of whom was Jeff Vandermeer. Aside from having one of my favorite surnames, Jeff was also a lot of fun to work with. On top of that, he is a writer. And I mean a Writer as in Some One Who Actually Gets Published. (I've been reading a lot of A. A. Milne to Adah?)

Now I will confess, that I enjoy having a friend who is a real writer. He's a vicar for my own creative aspirations. Though I have done very little in the way of keeping in touch with him.

Jeff was kind enough to invite us to his book release party for his latest novel, Shriek: An Afterward. Sandra and I heard him read an excerpt from the novel, we watched a 15 minute short film based on the book, and we had the chance to chat with some common friends. Jeff is doing some exciting things and I would encourage to check out his work.

Another friend of ours, Brian Flager, has also been writing. Sandra and I have been somewhat closer to the process, as Sandra has been doing a lot of the editing for Brian. (I like to delude myself by thinking that I had a part in insipiring him to write. I once told him over lunch that we should stop being passive consumers of media, i.e., television, and that we should put some effort into producing.)

I should take my own advice.

    Change

Today was my last day with Creative Metrics. I've spent the week working at the office in Minneapolis, MN. Tonight, I'm spending the night my (ex)co-worker's house and I'm catching the 6:45am flight back to Tallahassee.
I'm anxious to get home; it's an ache , I want to see my family.

Next week I launch my new business with Rob Eisenberg. We're starting a software consulting pratice called Blue Spire Consutling. I'm excited and a little bit frigtened. We've had plently of business and we've barely started. Still, there is no regular paycheck.

Rob and I have also been blogging about .NET on a new community site called Devlico.us. Additionally, we found out this week that we made the finals for Microsoft's Code Master Challenge. We entered a game that we've been developing based on the old BBS game Trade Wars. (Incidentally, we started work on the game before I got hired at Creative Metrics!)

It's late and I need to get up in 4.5 hours to catch my plane.

    Near Wobegon

Last night in Eden Prairie, MN. The Super America on the corner of Pioneer Trail and Flying Cloud Drive. It's the closest place (that I know of) where I can get some cream for my coffee.

I'm staying at Michael Stewart's house. He is gone for the weekend and I am brewing some coffee in his kitchen. Only there's no cream and the milk in the fridge has gone sour. I really like cream in my coffee. Half-and-half, if I can manage it. It's about a five minute drive to the Super America, I'm lazy but I want a good cup of coffee.

Wil Turner holds the door for me at the store. I'm a little curious, but I'm more interested in whether or not they'll have some Real Creamer. All they have is the International Delight French Vanilla, though I am presented with the option for Reduced Sugar. I go for the Reduced Sugar. I'm standing in line with my creamer, excited by the fact that they are selling Frisbee Golf Discs in a convenience store and the Wicked Witch of the (Mid) West comes in, she's accompanied by Willow.

"Costume party somewhere tonight?" I smile at the cashier. She's friendly, overweight, and mumbly. Eventually, I make out "I would guess the Renaissance Festival, though I guess Halloween isn't too far off".

I drank three cups before going to bed.
